What makes a great wedding DJ
Look for proven wedding experience (not just club gigs), confident MC skills, a backup plan for gear failure, and a planning process that captures your must-play list, do-not-play list and key moments. The right DJ adapts the energy across the night, not just plays a static playlist.
Packages & pricing
Most NZ wedding DJ packages sit in the $1,200-$2,800 range. Auckland, Queenstown and destination weddings trend higher. Always confirm what's included — ceremony PA, MC mic, dance-floor lighting, second DJ — so you can compare like-for-like.
Booking timeline
Book 6-12 months out for peak season (Nov-Apr). For destination weddings in Queenstown, Waiheke, Hawke's Bay or the Coromandel, book 9-14 months out — top DJs sell out first.
Frequently asked
What does a wedding DJ actually do?
Beyond playing music, a good wedding DJ MCs your reception, coordinates with your photographer and caterer for cue moments (entry, cake, first dance), runs ceremony PA if needed, and reads your dance floor live to keep it moving.
How long should we book the DJ for?
Most NZ wedding DJ packages cover 5-6 hours including pre-dinner background music, formalities and dance set. Add ceremony PA if you need amplified vows and music outdoors.
Do wedding DJs supply lighting?
Most include basic dance-floor lighting. Uplighting around the room, dance-floor wash or monogram projection is usually an upgrade.
Should we make a do-not-play list?
Yes — a short do-not-play list is more useful than a long must-play list. Trust your DJ's reading of the room and flag any songs to avoid (ex's first-dance song, songs with bad family memories etc).
